With its dark, ferny foliage held from March to September, Astilbe arendsii x japonica ‘Younique Lilac’ offers up to four months of gap filling interest even before the flowers emerge. In June and July fuzzy plumes of feather like flowers explode forth, lending wonderous purple, pink tones to borders, rockeries and pots. Stems grow up to 50cm tall for fragrant impact in the garden and can be cut for a vase or bouquet too. Perfume is said to be sweetly floriferous, and plants are easy going enough for novice or busy gardeners, as well as those with in-depth experience. Astilbe arendsii x japonica ‘Younique Lilac’ is a new arrival for 2024 and prefers a spot in moist, well-drained soil which is clay or loam based. Plant in in partial sun to full shade with any aspect other than south facing. A fully hardy, herbaceous perennial which spreads to 50cm, plants will die back below ground over winter then re-emerge the following spring.
