These vigorous, dense climbers produces masses of huge, single flowers up to 7cm across with a central spray of lemon yellow stamens. Sometimes there is an occasional second flowering season later in the year. We’d recommend using them to cover up empty old walls or fences, or to bring life back to a neglected trellis. Growing at a glance…

Clematis are vigorous climbing plants that reach various heights and spreads. Its best to prune back to keep control over the growth annually and initially they should be tied in to help direct the new growth. Apply a liquid fertiliser each yearduring the growing season, and water regularly during hot periods. On arrival, pot on the young Clematis in a 4-6 inch pot for four to six weeks to help establish a root system. Once established, plant out into the final location, preferably with good drainage and plenty of sun. Soak in a bucket of water prior to planting and plant deep enough to allow plenty of room for root development. The roots of clematis like to be kept cool so it is a good idea to plant amongst low growing shrubs or bedding plants. If planting in containers, ensure the pot is large enough to allow the roots to expand/develop, as limitation of roots will certainly impede future success.
