Allium Medusa
Allium ‘Medusa’ is well known and widely popular for its slender foliage and abundance of circular blooms. It has an unusual twist at the end of each leaf and the grey-green foliage is perfect for ground cover, when planted en masses.
In the early summer months, purple globes of lollipop flower heads sit upon slender, upright stems. The blooms have a tendency to nod, with a viper-like appearance that straightens as they open. The rich purple blooms add an impactful statement to anywhere they grow and a vertical accent to garden displays. This variety is great for gravel gardens, patio borders or for adding height and texture at the front of sunny borders. Height: 60cm (24″). Spread: 10cm (4″).
Growing Information
Alliums thrive in light sandy, well drained soil in full sun. Avoid planting in cold wet soils as the bulbs are prone to rot in these conditions. Plant allium bulbs at a depth of 10cm (4”) and a distance of 10cm (4”) apart. A slow release fertilizer can be added to poor soils at the time of planting to improve fertility. When growing alliums, plant them where the leaves of other plants will cover the base of their stems. This will hide the old foliage which dies back before flowering begins.
