Allium Sphaerocephalon
This unique and understated allium with unusual oval-shaped, purple-green flower heads perches atop tall, slender stems. Like all Alliums, this bulb is easy to grow on well-drained soil, and will pretty much take care of itself. Sphaerocephalon must be planted in bold groups to appreciate it at its best. Grow them in dense clumps among other perennials – they associate particularly well with swaying grasses. The perfect choice for sunny borders and gravel gardens. Height: 90cm (36″). Spread: 8cm (3″).
Growing Information
Alliums thrive in light sandy, well drained soil in full sun. Avoid planting in cold wet soils as the bulbs are prone to rot in these conditions. Plant allium bulbs at a depth of 10cm (4″) and a distance of 10cm (4″) apart. A slow release fertilizer can be added to poor soils at the time of planting to improve fertility. When growing alliums, plant them where the leaves of other plants will cover the base of their stems. This will hide the old foliage which dies back before flowering begins.
