Leptospermum scoparium ‘Red Damask’ is a striking, evergreen shrub that boasts a profusion of nectar-rich flowers and aromatic foliage. This medium-sized shrub features graceful, arching branches adorned with narrow, deep green leaves that release a pleasant fragrance when crushed. The leaves contain natural oils with antibacterial properties, traditionally utilized by the M?ori. From late spring through summer, the shrub becomes a vibrant spectacle, with its branches crowned by exquisite, double blooms in a deep cerise shade. The flowers, which are long-lasting, are a magnet for pollinators, providing bees with an abundant source of nectar and pollen. Notably, Leptospermum is the source of the renowned Manuka honey, prized for its health benefits. This plant thrives in well-drained soil and a sheltered location, making it ideal for mild, coastal areas of the UK. It’s perfect for adding texture and colour to gravel gardens, wall-side borders, or courtyards, and is compact enough to be grown in large containers that can be moved indoors during winter. With its repeat blooming and bee-friendly qualities, it’s an excellent addition to any garden. Awarded the RHS Garden Merit, ‘Red Damask’ typically grows to a height of 1.5–2.5 meters (5–8 feet) and is a lovely choice for both ornamental and ecological gardening.
