Strongly fragrant sweet pea ‘Matucana’ produces sensational two-tone purple and scarlet flowers, making this a real delight from June to September, blooming right through. An old heirloom variety that traces back to 1700, having been brought to Britain by a Sicilian Monk, still being sold and remains popular to this day. Growing Information
Harden off your sweet pea plants gradually and plant out in late May or June, 23cm (9″) apart, in any well drained garden soil in full sun. Train the stems onto a suitable support such as a trellis or wigwam and tie in.
Feed and water sweet peas regularly throughout the growing season. It is essential to cut the flower stems frequently and deadhead faded blooms to prevent seedpods developing. This will encourage more blooms to be produced and extend the flowering period throughout summer.
