Tell Me More…
Asplenium scolopendrium is the popular and native Hart’s Tongue Fern with upright stems ideal for a shady spot. Attractive and ornate plants develop dense rosettes of big, glossy, evergreen upright leaves. Each spring fresh new tongue-like fronds unfurl, creating upright clumps which look fabulous dotted through a woodland floor – creating lush, verdant groundcover. Asplenium scolopendrium is unique in the way it loves and flourishes in the darkest shade. Plant several together to create a verdant display in the darkest spots. Perfect for nestling at the base of a shady wall, and as ground level interest in a woodland garden. Recognised by the RHS for its beautiful dependability by their Award of Garden Merit. Prefers moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil in full or partial shade. Dry shade will be tolerated, though plants must be watered regularly throughout the first season and mulched over winter. Avoid exposure to bright, midday sun which can cause damage, remove dead or tatty looking fronds in late winter or early spring before new ones unfurl. A hardy (H6), evergreen perennial which reaches a height of 75cm, spreading to 60cm.
