Tell Me More…
Big, beefy, and evergreen Native to forests throughout Asia this handsome evergreen has now naturalised in Europe. Arching, graceful fronds bear glossy, almost holly-like leaves, hence the common name, and form an attractive rosette. Perfect to brighten up a shady spot in your garden. Ferns have been in existence for million years and are easy – the ever-growing group of pteridologists (fern-collectors) is testament to the revival in the interest of ferns.Cyrtomium fortunei has been given the RHS Award of Garden Merit for outstanding performance in the garden. It prefers to be grown in moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil in partial to full shade and reaches a height and spread of 60cm. With an RHS hardiness rating of H3, this half-hardy perennial is capable of withstanding temperatures down to -5 C. To increase chances of survival in colder parts of the UK, grow in the shelter of a rock, wall, tree, or shrub, and cover the crown with straw in winter.
