Known as key lime, bartenders’ lime and West Indian Lime, this tree produces tart citrus fruit the size of a golf ball, ripening between September and December. Lustrous, leathery, evergreen foliage creates the perfect backdrop to the delicate white blossom and glossy green fruits. Citrus aurantifolia ‘Mexican Lime’ relishes a sheltered position, basking in plenty of sunshine. Plant in well-drained, loamy soil, with a neutral to acidic pH. This tree matures to a height of up to 4m, and spreads to 2.5m, however it is likely to remain a more manageable size in our cooler climate. As a tender, fruiting shrub Citrus aurantifolia ‘Mexican Lime’ is best grown in a container and brought into a heated greenhouse or conservatory over winter. Prune in spring every 2-3 years to improve access to light and air flow.
