An unusual member of the family, Dierama erectum stands out from the crowd. Tall, upright, grassy, semi-evergreen foliage form architectural clumps. In summer, stiff, wiry stems rise through the tufts, holding closely packed clusters of bright, mauve-pink, bell-shaped blooms. Standing prouder than its cousins, the blooms still nod in the breeze on even the calmest of days, providing continual movement. The autumnal seed-heads, make a fascinating feature if left on over winter. Excellent as cut flowers for airy displays, whether fresh or dried, Dierama are exquisitely beautiful and elegant. Native to South Africa, Dierama look amazing when grown amongst grasses. Diorama erectum prefers to be grown in moist, well-drained soil in sun. In maturity, it will reach 90-100cm tall, making a clump of up to 60cm. With an RHS hardiness rating of H4, this should not require winter protection in most winters, in most areas of the UK. A cormous perennial which may die back in winter to sprout again in the spring.
