The Rhododendron ‘Girard’s Variegated Hot Shot’ has a low spreading habit that makes it an ideal feature in acid borders. Its aggressively variegated foliage contrasts wonderfully with the ruffled, orange-red blossoms. Year-round colour to borders with olive green evergreen leaves with rich cream edges. Grow it in containers or a raised bed for a stunning display on the patio. The RHS Award of Garden Merit for this contemporary evergreen azalea is well-deserved. Height: 75cm (30″). Spread: 100cm (39″).
Growing Information
Grow Rhododendrons in moist, well drained, acid soil that has been enriched with plenty of well rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Rhododendron plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply.
