Liriodendron tulipifera is grown for its superb big, glossy leaves, which make it a particularly eye-catching tree for the larger garden. In a magnificent autumn display, the distinctively shaped leaves transition from green to a buttery hue of gold. The Tulip Tree blooms with big, individual tulip-shaped green-white summer flowers that are followed by cone-like fruits as they mature, but flowering may take ten years or more. This RHS AGM species grows into a huge, robust columnar tree that demands a lot of room to enjoy it at its best. Height: 20m (65′). Spread: 10m (32′).
Growing Information
Grow Tulip Trees in a sunny or semi shaded position. Plant Liriodendron tulipifera in a rich, moist, well drained, neutral to slightly acid soil. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve the soil prior to planting, mixing it thoroughly and deeply.
