Banana Musa basjoo

Banana Musa basjoo is the perfect addition to the tropical exotic garden and although it is a tender perennial, this Japanese Banana will survive the winter in milder parts of the UK if given some winter protection. Suitable for container growing too, making it easier to move indoors for the colder months. The huge, long leaves unfurl from the top of a woody stem to create shade and a holiday feeling without leaving home! All you will need is a cocktail! Also known as the Japanese banana palm, white flowers will appear when mature and if you are lucky, you may find small, edible green fruits . This is a fantastic plant and will guarantee to make an impact in any garden. Height: 5m (16’). Spread: 4m (13’).

Growing Information

In very mild areas, grow Musa in any moist, fertile, well-drained soil in full sun, with shelter from strong winds. In frost prone areas, Banana plants are best grown in containers of soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3, which can be moved to a warm frost-free greenhouse or conservatory in winter.
