Tell Me More…
These popular, award-winning plants are often seen decorating stone walls and rock gardens. However, the dense mat-forming growth of your Campanula portenschlagiana is equally suited to providing weed-suppressing groundcover in a border. This versatility, alongside a dependable performance, means the RHS has bestowed its Award of Garden Merit on the fantastic plant. The foliage on the evergreen campanula is toothed and rounded, then, from June to August, a glorious mass of starry blooms covers the foliage. These flowers introduce a shimmering splash of violet to your garden, with blooms reaching around 2cm in length. In balmy weather, some blooms may even continue into autumn spreading their joyous colour even further. The pollen rich flowers will also attract the attention of bees and butterflies for even greater interest. Campanula portenschlagiana prefers a spot in moist, well-drained soil of any kind except clay. Plant in full sun or partial shade of any aspect other than north facing. This hardy (H5) perennial will reach an optimum height of 20cm with a spread of up to 50cm.
