Delphiniums really are the darlings of the cottage garden, they bloom throughout summer lending their rich, sophisticated hues above lush, verdant cushions of foliage which emerge in spring and remain right through until autumn. With clever management they often give two lots of exuberant blooms – that means more for the pollinators (who love these easily accessible, nectar-rich flowers) and more for the vase. Enchantingly, the centre of each flower on a delphinium is actually called a ‘bee’ – perhaps because they are frequently found in the middle of a bloom! Adaptable, herbaceous perennials which happily thrive in a container or in open ground if provided with either full sun or partial shade and easy-going on the maintenance front too.
