A special and stunning variety of medium-sized shrub which holds its leaves from March to November each year. Foliage is pinnate and delightfully feathery in nature; leaves emerge with a copper red hue and shift to a beautiful yellow-green which almost glows with vitality. In June and July creamy white clusters of lacy flowers emerge and add their herby-floral scent to the garden. Blooms are followed by glossy red elder berries which offer a feast to the birds and other wildlife. Much admired for its versatility and dependability – the RHS has bestowed its prestigious Award of Garden Merit on Sambucus racemosa ‘Sutherland Gold’. Small enough for large containers, Sambucus racemosa ‘Sutherland Gold’ reaches a height and spread of up to 3 metres and can be pruned to a smaller size where needed. Prune just after flowering but bear in mind that this plant flowers the next year on old wood. An excellent specimen plant which is happy in moist, well drained soil of any kind. Position in full sun or partial shade and you will enjoy this fully hardy (H7) deciduous shrub for years and years.
