Damson ‘Shropshire Prune’ goes way back to the 17th century with its history, still providing modern growers a rewarding addition to gardens and edible allotment spaces. Harvest the blue-black fruits in late September, to enjoy their fresh and sharp taste eaten straight from the tree. Alternatively through cooking, the sharpness dulls down bringing out a rich, plum flavour. Ideal for making jams, wines and pies, the variety of Damson is hardy and very resilient, perfect for UK growing. Self-fertile, it does not need a pollinating partner to produce bumper crops every year. Plum rootstocks: VVA1 – Semi dwarf reaching a mature height of up to 2.5m (8′). St. Julien – Semi vigorous reaching a mature height of up to 4.5m (14′). This variety is self-fertile and does not require a pollination partner. Estimated time to cropping once planted: 2 years. Estimated time to best yields: 4 years.
Growing Information
Plant plum trees in any well drained soil in a sheltered, sunny position. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole and drive the stake into the ground to support the tree. Staking after planting may result in damage to the root ball. Plant fruit trees at their original soil level and firm them into the ground. Fasten the tree to the stake using a tree tie, and water well.
