Photinia ‘Red Robin’ is the most well-known of its species. It is admired for its springtime display of vivid scarlet leaves. Even with hard pruning, this vibrant RHS AGM cultivar may produce an effective evergreen hedge. A striking two-tone effect results from the shiny young leaves and red stalks contrasting with the established green foliage lower on the plant. Round clusters of creamy white flowers complement the spring foliage. This well-liked evergreen shrub can be grown as a low-maintenance display plant or planted in forest areas and shrubberies to add a burst of spring colour. Photinia can also be planted in frost-prone areas close to a warm wall or under the protection of other plants. Height and spread: up to 4m (13′).

Growing Information

Grow Photinia plants in a sunny or semi shaded position, in any moderately fertile, moist, well drained soil. In frost prone areas, plant Photinia next to a warm wall or in the shelter of other shrubs. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Plant Photinia shrubs at the same depth as they were planted in their pots. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil.
