This American wisteria is the perfect woody garden climber to give you summer colour and attractive spring and autumn foliage. The magnificent pollen-rich, violet flowers bloom in dense clusters between 5cm-10cm long from May to June. Shiny brown seed heads follow the purple blooms and combine well with the deciduous leaves as they turn a stunning golden yellow before falling. Wisteria frutescens is less vigorous than the more common Japanese and Chinese Wisteria which makes it more suited to a small garden or border. Perfect for growing as a screen over walls, trellis, or fences this Wisteria can be planted in a mixed border or in container planting.
This climber will grow happily in any soil type that is moist and well-drained. Preferring full-sun or partial shade ‘Longwood Purple’ needs shelter and a large amount of light.
