Sowing Indoors
Level fill a module tray with seed compost firming with the base of another tray. Water well with a fine rose. Sow seeds 4-5 per cell over the surface covering seeds with 1cm (1/2in) compost. Place in a propagator at 10-15 degrees Celsuis (50-60 Fahrenheit) or cover tray with cling film and leave in a warm room. Keep moist.
Growing On
When shoots appear, remove cling film. Keep seedlings in a light position, but shade from direct sunlight. Grow on in a minimum temperature of 10 degrees Celsuis (50 Fahrenheit).
Hardening Off/Planting Out
When seedling are approx 5cm (2in) tall and rootball holds firm plant out in rows 30cm (12in apart) leaving 5cm (2in) between each module.
Sowing Outdoors
Sow seeds thinly in a shallow pre-watered row. Lightly cover them with a little soil. Allow 30cm (12in) between rows. Keep moist until seedlings are established. Small sowings made every three weeks ensures continuous supply.
Thinning
Thin to 2cm (1in) apart. Thinnings are delicious in salads.
Harvest
May – October
Autumn sowings may need cloche protection or grow indoors.
