Description
The Cork Oak is a truly fantastic tree which is given its common name due to the deeply fissured corky bark that it produces: in fact, it is one of only a handful of trees that is able to re-generate its bark and it produces the cork through the dead bark cells that are rich in suberin – a wax-like coating. For the average gardener however, the Quercus Suber is valued for its ornamental properties and it makes a great specimen tree. The slightly lobed leaves are pointed at their tips and are dark green in colour with paler undersides. Acorns also appear in autumn on more mature trees and these are popular with wildlife.
