One of our best known wild flowers! It produces beautiful spikes of nodding, violet-blue, bell-shaped flowers and has a glorious honey scent. Ideal for planting under deciduous trees and shrubs, it will naturalise readily. Flowers April-May. Height 30-40cm. Grown from cultivated stock.
Simply choose a spot where they will remain undisturbed – in a shady corner, or at the base of deciduous trees and shrubs is ideal – and they will quickly multiply to create a carpet of plants that will delight you with a spectacular show year after year.
Growing Information
Plant bluebells in the dappled shade of deciduous trees. English bluebell bulbs thrive in reliably moist, well drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Add plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting, to improve less than ideal soils. Plant bulbs at a depth of 10cm (4″) and 10cm (4″) apart. For natural looking drifts of bluebell flowers, gently cast the bulbs across the planting area and plant them where they land!
