Tell Me More…
When it comes to adding vibrant colour to a shady spot, few plants can better the candelabra primula, particularly Primula japonica ‘Appleblossom’. This robust cultivar forms rosettes of crinkled leaves, from which emerge stout stems bearing wonderfully chunky whorls of pale pink flowers with darker pink centres, blooming from March until June. Derived from a species found growing in moist, shady areas in Japan, ‘Appleblossom’ is happiest when planted in similar conditions, where the luminous flowers almost glow in the dim light of their surroundings. Suitable for borders, pond margins, woodland gardens or even containers (if regularly watered). Candelabra primulas are most effective when grown in generous drifts, which can be achieved by allowing plants to set seed and naturalise.Prefers deep, humus-rich, moist, neutral to acid soil in partial shade. Full sun will be tolerated if the soil remains moist. H&S: 60cm x 45cm. Hardy perennial.
