Perfect prairie style performerAn attractive and unusual cultivar of this North American prairie grass. Panicum virgatum ‘Northwind’ is favoured for its upright clumps of blue-green leaves, which are held from March-November each year. These intriguing grasses add movement and structural interest to your garden – looking fabulous in a dry garden, prairie style meadow or even in a special container. Mix with tall flowering perennials such as aster, echinacea and verbena, for a swaying, naturalistic effect. From August to September, this bold, linear foliage is softened with a mass of hazy, cloud-like panicles of pink flowers, adding further airy qualities to your planting. Foliage also turns a glorious golden yellow orange in autumn as an end of season crescendo before it fades to buff. We like to leave this grass in situ throughout winter as it not only offers continued structural form it also gives a beneficial habitat for overwintering wildlife. It can then be cut back just before new growth emerges in early spring. A hardy, deciduous perennial which prefers an open textured, moderately fertile and well-drained soil in full sun.
