Tell Me More…
Eastern exotic with delicate, lacy frondsPolystichum polyblepharum is an evergreen charmer from South Korea and Japan – a perfect addition to a shady area in your garden. This species takes its name from the Latin for “many eyelashes” – a reference to the plant’s bristly stems. This RHS Award of Garden Merit winner provides a shuttlecock-like display of finely divided, ferny foliage. The erect fronds have a coating of golden hairs when young, providing a yellowish green display in spring, before maturing to a glossy, deep green in summer. Your Polystichum polyblepharum prefers a sheltered, East or North-facing location. Full or part shade and fertile, well-drained soil ensures this fully hardy perennial thrives. Your Japanese Lace Fern is also ideal for a rockery or container where it will tolerate dry conditions. In maturity, Polystichum polyblepharum reaches a maximum height and spread of 80cm by 90cm.
