Description

Transport yourself to the Mediterranean with this cost-saving bundle of 3 trees. Aimed at those looking to create a Mediterranean-style garden, these trees will happily thrive in the UK. Plant them in a sunny spot and combine with terracotta planters and cooling water features for your own Mediterranean-style oasis, right on your doorstep.

Nothing says traditional Tuscan countryside like the classic Italian Cypress. Cupressus sempervirens ‘Pyramidalis’ is an evergreen conifer with a narrow, columnar shape that is ideal for creating an architectural statement, especially when planted in pairs or groups. Will grow up to 15 metres in height but is happily pruned to size.

Laurus nobilis, or the Bay Laurel, is a glossy evergreen tree which is native to the Mediterranean and well-known for its wonderful, aromatic leaves. Leave these leaves on the tree to fill the garden with fragrance, or use them in the kitchen to season dishes such as stews and soups. Happily pruned to size, but if left unpruned will reach an approx. height and spread of 6 x 4 metres in 20 years.

The award-winning Brown Turkey Fig is an excellent choice for UK gardens and one of the most popular varieties of fig. This hardy and self-fertile tree will produce sweet and juicy fruits with a bright red flesh as well as attractive green foliage. It can reach a height of 2.5 metres in 10 years.

Plants supplied:

Cupressus sempervirens ‘Pyramidalis’, Single stem tree, 80-100cm, 10L pot*

Planting Steps

1Preparation

  • Pot-grown plants can be planted at any time of year, whereas bare roots need to be planted between November and March.
  • Clear weeds and grass within a metre of the planting hole.
  • Dig a hole as deep as the root mass and twice as wide.
  • To help your plant establish more effectively, sprinkle Rootgrow in the hole.

2Planting

  • Gently loosen the roots and place into the planting hole.
  • Ensure the top of the plant’s compost is flush with the level of the surrounding soil and the graft union or collar of the tree is above ground level.
  • Mix 50% of the original soil with 50% compost.
  • Fill in the hole, firming the soil gently.

3Last Steps

  • Water generously around the base of the plant.
  • If you are planting either a single stem tree or mature standard tree, we recommend adding a staking kit and rabbit guard.

Aftercare Advice

Trees and shrubs require a good watering regime for a couple of years whilst they establish. Water well and regularly through spring and summer, increasing in hot or dry weather. If planting in autumn, you may only need to water a little. It is advisable to keep the area free of competing weeds and grass during this period.
