Tell Me More…
New to us for 2024, Mahonia ‘Volcano’ offers a fiery and exciting colour development in the world of mahonia. The archetypal, robust, fern-like foliage is spine free and retained all year – offering the perfect backdrop to generous, showy spires of blooms. In an harmonious gesture new leaves also emerge with bronze tones and develop a more verdant, silvery sheen as they mature, whilst flowers begin as multiples on strong stems. The tightly closed copper red buds gradually unfurl into golden yellow-orange blooms from September to November, with ornamental berries following after. Mahonia ‘Volcano’ is less imposing than many other varieties at a height of 1.2m, with a spread of 1m. This makes it perfect for smaller spaces and ideal for container planting. Add to a balcony, patio or courtyard for an exotic looking yet robust conversation piece. Plants prefer fertile, moist, well-drained soil of any kind and position in full sun or partial shade. A hardy (H5), evergreen shrub which should not need additional winter protection throughout most of the UK.
