Meconopsis baileyi Hensol Violet

A sought-after hardy perennial providing masses of poppies!

Meconopsis baileyi ‘Hensol Violet’ was given its name for its origins from Hensol House, Scotland, where it was discovered by Lady Henderson. Popular Himalayan Blue Poppies face competition with this bright violet-purple variety, bearing delicate blooms with the merest hint of red and pink.

It makes a beautiful addition to any garden it grows in and is especially impactful when planted in masses along shady borders or woodland areas. Height: 90cm (36″). Spread: 30cm (12″).

Growing Information

Pot up meconopsis plants into peaty compost and grow them on in bright, frost-free conditions with protection from strong, direct sunlight. When they are well grown, acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days, prior to planting out in their final positions. Choose a sheltered spot in semi or dappled shade – a cool, moist woodland situation is ideal, but the Himalayan poppy will also thrive in a moist, shaded border. Meconopsis prefers a rich, moist, neutral to acid, well drained soil that remains moist throughout summer, but does not sit wet in winter.
