The ultimate cut and come again oriental salad leaf
The Mizuna is one of the most popular and easy to grow of the oriental leaves. The variety Red Empire has striking dark red upper leaves with lime green undersides and stalks. Mizuna plants will grow through winter in a cold greenhouse, harvesting from January to December. F1 Vigour and performance. Height 21-30cm (8-12″); spread 11-20cm (4-8″).
The Red Empire tastes like a peppery, but slightly less spicy rocket or mustard. Use this variety like a rocket and add a burst of colour to salads and sandwiches or leave to grow larger and used in stir-fries.
Growing Information
Seeds can be sown 1cm deep in containers of good quality compost indoors for baby leaf production all year round, grow on a sunny windowsill. Germination 7-14 days. alternatively, seeds can be started in the garden from March-September in rows 30cm apart, thinning the seedlings gradually to 25cm between plants (thinned seedlings can be added to salads or stir fry). Can also be grown in a greenhouse during winter, sow seeds in September as you start to remove your tomatoes.
