Description
This is a narrower form of the deservedly popular Davidia involucrata and its upright, columnar habit means it is suitable for smaller spaces. It’s an excellent choice for adding structure with architectural planting. The species is well-known for its highly distinctive flower bracts (the protective leaves that cover the flower) and these are large, white and flutter in the breeze like a handkerchief. The flowers themselves are small, purple and spherical. In terms of foliage the leaves are mid-green, heart-shaped and make the perfect foil for the snowy bracts.
It is worth noting that the flowers and bracts do not always appear on younger trees but they are certainly worth the wait when they do arrive.
