Tell Me More…
You will be amazed by the sheer number of blooms which one Arctotis x hybrida hort. ‘Holly’ plant can produce. Rich, deep red, almost velvety, flowers, up to 8cm across, have warming, ember-like yellow centres and blooms are produced in abundance from mid-summer to the first frosts. Each daisy-like bloom is held high on a long stem – perfect when cut for a vase or bouquet. Oh, and if you look beneath the finely cut, silver-grey foliage you will see many more buds, just waiting their turn to emerge and open into the sunshine. Pollinator friendly, the flowers have good weather resistance and reach a height and spread of 30-40cm. As a tender, herbaceous perennial Arctotis x hybrida ‘Holly’ will need protection from temperatures dipping below around 1 to 5°C. Arctotis are frequently grown as annual bedding in the UK yet can be overwintered in a heated greenhouse or conservatory, then returned outside the following year. Arctotis prefer well-drained soil of any type except clay and enjoys a position in full sun.
