Sowing Indoors
Level fill a module tray with seed compost firming with the base of another tray. Water well with a fine rose. Sow seeds individually covering seeds with 1cm (1/2in) compost. Place in a propagator at 10-15 degrees Celsuis (50-60 Fahrenheit) or cover tray with cling film and leave in a warm room. Keep moist.
Growing On
When shoots appear, remove cling film. Keep seedlings in a light position, but shade from direct sunlight. Grow on in a minimum temperature of 10-15 degrees Celsuis (50-60 Fahrenheit). Gradually accustom plants to outdoor conditions before planting out.
Sowing Outdoors
Sow seeds thinly in a shallow pre-watered row. Lightly cover them with a little more soil. Keep moist until seedinlings are established, thinning to 2cm (1in) apart.
Planting Out
When seedlings have produced 4 leaves, transplant them to their cropping position leaving 45cm (18in) between plants in rows 60cm (24in) apart. Firm in and keep well watered in dry spells.
Harvest
July – September. Remove main stem when it is the size of a golf ball to encourage tender side shoots. Harvest regularly for longer supply.
