Normally grown for its fragrant, decorative blossom which emerges in March to May and attracts hungry bumble bees, along with other pollinators. Chaenomeles x superba ‘Pink Trail’ is a vigorous, wide-spreading shrub with tangled, spiny branches and glossy, oval, dark green leaves. Shrubs reach a height of 1 metre, spreading to around 1.5 metres.The bowl shaped blooms are around 4cm across and smell of ‘lemons, with a hint of pineapple’. They appear ‘en masse’ to create a spectacular sight which lasts for weeks. Flowers are followed, in autumn, by green-yellow, sweetly scented fruit which resembles small apples. Fruit is hard and astringent when raw yet, if cooked to make jam or jelly, becomes deliciously aromatic.
