The large, rounded blooms of Allium schubertii ‘Arctic Snow’ explode into a dazzling display of white stars, with the central cluster forming a tight ball and slender stems extending outward like sparkling fireworks. This variety brings a unique twist to spring and early summer gardens, offering a refreshing departure from the usual globe-shaped alliums. Its airy, delicate flowers provide a lighter contrast to the dense foliage of surrounding perennials. Even after flowering, the dried heads make striking additions to indoor floral arrangements. Grows to a height of 40cm (16in), with a spread of 30cm (12in).
Growing Information
Alliums thrive in free-draining soils in full sun. If growing in clay soils, add grit when planting to improve drainage. Avoid planting in cold wet soils as the bulbs are prone to rot in these conditions. Plant allium bulbs at a depth of 10cm (4”) and a distance of 10cm (4”) apart. A slow release fertilizer can be added to poor soils at the time of planting to improve fertility. When growing alliums, plant them where the leaves of other plants will cover the base of their stems. This will hide the old foliage which dies back before flowering begins.
