Description

Origin and Habitat: The parent species, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana, is native to the Pacific Northwest of the United States, particularly in Oregon and Northern California. The ‘Ellwood’s Empire’ cultivar is a garden variety developed for ornamental use.

Physical Characteristics:

Size and Shape: ‘Ellwood’s Empire’ is a compact, slow-growing evergreen conifer that typically reaches a height of about 1-2 meters (3-6 feet) with a width of around 0.5-1 meter (1.5-3 feet). It has a dense, columnar or pyramidal shape, making it ideal for small gardens, borders, or as a container plant.

Foliage: The foliage is soft, feathery, and blue-green, which adds year-round color and texture to the landscape. The leaves are scale-like and tightly packed on the stems.

Cultivation:

Soil: It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. It can tolerate a range of soil types but performs best in fertile, moist soil.

Light: This cultivar thrives in full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, some afternoon shade can help prevent foliage from scorching.

Water: Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods. However, it does not tolerate waterlogged soils well.

Pruning: Minimal pruning is required to maintain its shape. Any pruning should be done in late winter or early spring before new growth starts.

Hardiness: ‘Ellwood’s Empire’ is hardy in USDA zones 5-8, which means it can tolerate temperatures down to about -20°C (-4°F). It is relatively resistant to common pests and diseases but should be monitored for root rot if planted in poorly drained soils.

Uses: It is often used as an accent plant in gardens, for hedging, in rock gardens, or as a specimen plant. Its compact size and attractive foliage make it a popular choice for small spaces and container planting
