Onion Seeds – Elista
With onion ‘Elista’, you don’t need to worry about stressful preparations or cut fingers. This variety is easy to peel and super easy to prep in the kitchen. Torpedo (elliptical) onions like these have a different kind of shape to any other regular onion, and by being slimmer than most, this gives them the ability to be easier to peel and slice. This also means less waste and less chance of cutting your fingers like you can on traditionally shaped onions, and you get to enjoy almost every ounce of your crop!
‘Elista’ is the brown variety of onion and has a stronger flavour. It is great for multiple homemade dishes but is especially delicious in French onion soup! If you cook your own winter casseroles, why not add these to the mix.
Once ready, the bulbs can be harvested in August and can last in storage until April/May the following year. You heard right, that’s 9-10 months it can last in storage!
Sowing Information
Sow thinly March/April into finely raked, firmed soil 13mm ( 1?2″) deep in rows 30cm (12″) apart (Germination 7-21 days). Thin seedlings to 10cm (4″) between plants. Use thinning as salad onions. Can also be sown February, 3 seeds per small pot in a propagator or greenhouse at approximately 15-20°C (60- 68°F) eventually planting outside in well-prepared soil. Water freely during dry weather.
