Rhododendron ‘Vuyk’s Scarlet’ is a well-known cultivar that has a vigorous growth pattern and has been granted a coveted RHS AGM. It’s scarlet blooms in masses of crimson-red funnel-shaped flowers in early May. This azalea grows into a clean, dense shrub that is evergreen. Small, lustrous evergreen leaves cover the low, spreading branches, providing a year-round hue in acidic borders and pots. Height: 90 cm (36″). Spread: 120 cm (48″).
Growing Information
Grow Rhododendrons in moist, well drained, acid soil that has been enriched with plenty of well rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Rhododendron plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply.
