Phormium is an outstanding, compact, hardy perennial, that will be sure to introduce an architectural statement to any bed, border or patio pot. ‘Rainbow Queen’ and it’s bright bronze-green coloured foliage that shoots out in sword-like points, will provide interest all year round. In summer, red flowers will appear in the centres. Plant in full sun, although it does appreciate some shade, but in the winter be sure to bring inside or protect from the bitter cold winter. Height 1m (39”) and spread 1.5m (59”).
Growing Information
Grow Phormium on fertile, well-drained soil. Choose a protected position in full sun. Phormiums are well suited to mild coastal locations and can cope in poorer soils, but do enjoy a fertile soil – so it is well worth incorporating some well-rotted manure into the soil when planting.
