Bred from the well-known ‘Scarlet Emperor’ Runner Bean that has been on the market for well over a century, ‘Scarlet Empire’ steps up as an improved version of the former, producing smoother and bigger pods that are just as tasty and early cropping, while also being stringless. Growing Information
Plant runner beans outdoors in rich fertile, well drained soil in full sun or semi shade with protection from strong winds. Avoid freshly manured soil which will promote lush foliage instead of beans.
Plant runner beans at a distance of 30cm (12″) apart in rows that are 1.5m (5′) apart, or where space is limited, grow beans onto a wigwam structure. Runner beans require support from garden canes, strings or netting which should be put in place at the time of planting.
