A newcomer which has been bred as a compact version for those of us with smaller spaces, courtyards and balconies. Aquilegia ‘Earlybird Blue White’ offers lilac-blue and white flowers with long, spurred backs and open, deeply cupped faces in May and June each year. Blooms resemble old fashioned bonnets – hence their other common name – Granny’s Bonnets. Alongside flowers, foliage emerges in April and is retained throughout summer with its deeply cut, lacy leaves bringing additional interest.Exceptionally attractive to pollinators and other wildlife, these cottage garden favourites will not only delight you and your visitors, they will also make an ecological contribution too. Even better, the flowers last well in a vase, so you can enjoy them inside your home too. Plants will readily naturalise in the right conditions, however seedheads can be removed to prevent this.Aquilegia ‘Earlybird Blue White’ prefers a spot in moist, well-drained soil which benefits from full sun or partial shade. A fully hardy, herbaceous perennial which reaches a maximum height and spread of 30cm.
