Tell Me More…
A big, bold, foliage plant to make a dramatic statement, Astilboides tabularis is an unusual beauty, that creates true, tropical-like, magnificence for your moist, shaded area. Large, scalloped, lily-pad-like leaves up to 90cm across, with ruffled edges and prominent veins are held on strong stalks, being round, they look almost umbrella-like. Grown with the correct conditions, a handsome clump will form in a few years, making a spectacular display. In June and July, large flowerheads of creamy-white, Astilbe-like flowers are held in inflorences up to 25cm long on tall 1m stems, which are excellent cut for your home, lasting well in a vase. Previously known as Rodgersia, Astilboides actually means ‘looks like an astilbe’, it prefers moist soil in full or part shade and would make a wonderful waterside focal point beside a stream or pond. Growing to a height and spread of approximately 1.2m, it is a fully hardy perennial to be enjoyed for years to come, grown outside all year round without the need for any winter protection.
