Tell Me More…
Abeliophyllum distichum ‘Roseum’, is also known as White Forsythia although the blooms are tinged with a pink blush. Originating from central Korea, it is generally grown for the fragrance. Endangered in the wild, it is regarded as a medicinal plant with properties similar to Witch Hazel and gets illegally harvested for the black-market trade in Korea. Closely related to the common yellow Forsythia. In late winter/early spring purple buds appear on bare branches and open into small, white, star-shaped blooms, omitting a sweet rose and orange blossom fragrance. Cut for an indoor arrangement, it lasts well for you to enjoy the scent in your home. Glossy green foliage follows shortly afterwards which gives an incredible autumnal display as it matures to purple before falling again. Abeliophyllum distichum ‘Roseum’ prefers to be grown in full sun though will tolerate part shade. It is not fussy on soil conditions although it prefers not to be too dry. Growing to a height and spread of 1-1.5m, it would also be happy in a large container.
