Tell Me More…
The Buddleja family are immensely popular, woody shrubs. Buddleja davidii ‘True Blue’ is the bluest of all buddleja – with panicles of nectar-rich, purple blue, beautiful honey scented flowers borne from July to September each year. If this is not enough, the foliage which is held from March to November each year, is silvery green and will shimmer as it catches the breeze. Flowers are born in panicles and have orange, pin-head centres. As the common name suggests, these intriguing blooms are irresistible to butterflies, bees and other pollinators – with native small tortoiseshell, red admiral and peacock varieties being frequent visitors.Buddleja davidii ‘True Blue’ will thrive in beds, borders and even a large container. Position where it can benefit from full sun, although shrubs will tolerate partial shade, and choose a site with any aspect other than north-facing. Prefers well-drained soil and is drought tolerant once a good root structure is established. Flowers are produced on new growth so prune back hard in early spring each year. A hardy, deciduous shrub which grows to 2m in height with a maximum spread of 1.8m.
