Tell Me More…
Add a touch of romanceFor an easy, low input way to achieve masses of flowers year in, year out, flowering shrubs take some beating, particularly the sumptuous Weigela ‘Red Prince’. This undemanding, deciduous shrub has a neat, rounded habit, bearing lush green leaves, and, from May to June, masses of showy, deep, ruby red, funnel-shaped blooms. Of medium size, it is perfect for the rear of a mixed border, a shrub border, or a woodland edge. Flowers are extremely attractive to bees. Prefers any fertile, well-drained soil. Derived from plants found in the woodland margins of E Asia, this weigela is happy in full sun or partial shade. H&S: 1.5m. Hardy, deciduous shrub. For a dense, vigorous appearance, prune annually after flowering, trimming back top growth lightly, and (once established) cutting out around a quarter of old shoots at the base.
