Tell Me More…
Frilly and charming double blooms delicately sway in the breeze above layers of lacy, grey-green foliage from May to July. Easy to grow and so rewarding in return, Aquilegia are a delight in any planting scheme. Attractive, almost bubbly, foliage forms pretty clumps, from which tall, wiry stems rise to display their treasure. Aquilegias have many common names, such as Granny’s Bonnet, or Columbine. In folklore, carrying a posy of Columbine was said to stir the affections of someone you love. Your collection comprises: Nora Barlow, Christa Barlow, Black Barlow, White Barlow, Blue Barlow and Bordeaux Barlow. The spur-less Barlow series were bred from a plant originally found in the garden of Nora Barlow. Despite the delicate appearance, Barlow varieties of aquilegia are robust and easy-going. Plant in moist, well-drained soil, in sun or part shade. Aquilegia will self-seed around your garden, or alternatively, you can collect the seed to sow and raise more plants for the following year. Growing to a height of 90cm and spreading to around 30-45cm they are both rabbit and slug resistant.
