Tell Me More…
Such is the beauty of British native wildflower betony; it has been the subject of many breeding programmes all over the world. Probably the biggest success story so far is ‘Hummelo’ bred in the 1960s (named after Piet Oudolf’s garden). A familiar sight in naturalistic planting schemes nowadays. More recently American breeders have developed a series of taller varieties with slightly taller flower clusters, available in a wider range of colours. We are delighted to bring these exciting finds to the UK and Abundant Betonica officinalis Collection comprises a colourful trio: ‘Summer Snowcone’ offers an avalanche of white flowers; ‘Summer Sweets’ is a pale, sugary rose-pink, and ‘Summer Grapes’ is a rich, lavender purple. All have mounds of attractive, wrinkled leaves and bear their flowers on long, leafless stems (excellent for cutting). As a member of the mint family, betonica (formerly referred to as stachys) has aromatic, deer-resistant foliage and, in sunny conditions, plants will spread gently via rhizomatous growth. Abundant Betonica officinalis Collection prefers well-draining, moderately fertile soil of any kind except clay. Position in full sun to partial shade. A hardy, semi-evergreen perennial which reaches a height and spread of 50-60cm.
