This popular Japanese barberry is known for its vibrant purple foliage that turns bright red in the autumn. Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea bears yellow blooms along the length of each branch in spring, which pollinating insects adore. The flowers are followed by bright red berries, which provide a rich source of food for wild birds. This hardy, resilient shrub has a dense, rounded habit and makes an excellent specimen shrub for borders and wildlife areas, as well as a spiny hedge. Height: 100 cm (40″). Spread: 250 cm (98″).
Growing Information
Plant Berberis in full sun or partial shade, on a reliably moist, well-drained soil. Barberry plants are extremely resilient and will grow on many different soil types, except waterlogged.
