Grow the sunflower with the biggest head! The flower heads can grow up to a massive 50cm (20″) wide on strong, sturdy stems. But it is after the flower is gone that your bird table is formed and it’s an edible one! The old flower head is full of seeds to feed the birds well into the autumn. Height 3.5m (12′).
Growing Information
Sow your seeds individually into small plant pots and grow them on a sunny windowsill. From March as the plant’s roots stick out of the bottom of the pot, plant into a bigger plant pot with more space. Plant outside in mid May using a tall cane as a support. Seeds can also be sown straight into the ground two fingers deep in May. The flower is ready to use as a bird table when it has dropped its petals and you can see the seeds. Get a grown-up to chop the flower off and put it on a wall or table. You can then watch the birds eat the seeds, you can eat them too! See your flowers from July to September.
