Anemone leveillei is a woodland-dweller which, from April into June, produces masses of elegant, white flowers atop strong, wiry stems. These have a hint of electric purple, both in their central cluster of stamens and coloured streaks on the back. The attractive, soft, hairy foliage forms low mounds, perfect for use as groundcover under deciduous trees and shrubs or towards the front of a border. Very effective as a large, naturalised swathe, a group of Anemone leveillei planted in reliably moist soil will form a beautiful colony in just a few years. Unusually for a woodland plant it will tolerate any light level from full sun to deep shade, though dappled shade will provide the best results (and the most rapid naturalising). This herbaceous perennial is hardy to between -5°C and -10°C, and so able to cope with the average UK winter. It dislikes being moved, so choose your planting spot carefully. H & S: 30-60cm.
