Tell Me More…
Thunbergia alata ‘Suneyes Red’ gives a wonderful, colourful summer display. From spring to autumn, this enthusiastic climber is covered with blooms as it twines around obelisks, fences, or trellis. Also, if planted in hanging baskets it will trail, and if planted into the ground it will sprawl along the ground, creating mats of weed suppressing cover. Native to eastern Africa and also known as Black-eyed Susan Vine, the common name is thought to have come from a character in many traditional ballads who cried as she searched for her lost lover, sweet William. Some say the two plants flower at the same time because of their great love for each other. A tender herbaceous perennial, Thunbergia elata ‘Suneyes Red’ prefers to be grown in well-drained soil in sun or part shade. Reaching a mature height of 2.4m, protection will be required over winter.
